NMDOT ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN DIVISION

The Environmental Design Division guides and directs the Department in environmental stewardship, cultural resource management, hazardous waste identification and assessment, and public involvement in order to assist in the environmentally responsible development, construction, and maintenance of a quality transportation system. The Division obtains environmental and cultural resource approvals for transportation projects through investigations, consultations, analysis, and documentation. The Division attempts to eliminate or minimize the risk and cost to the Department from hazardous materials impacts in right of way acquisitions, project development or construction, by providing hazardous materials regulatory guidance and assure on-going compliance.

It is the collective goal of the Division to ensure compliance with environmental, hazardous material regulations, and cultural resource commitments through oversight before, during, and after construction, and as necessary for maintenance activities. The Division facilitates environmental compliance for all Department activities through ongoing education of Department employees.
